1 - Brief history and development trend of Ink

China was the first country to use ink. As early as the Xi Han Dynasty (200 BC), people began to use ink. This ink can write on bamboo and silk to convey information. Some of its functions can be compared with modern ink.

Ink was improved in the 15th century when Germany Gutenberg invented lead alloy type printing. In the middle of the 19th century, ink manufacturers were able to produce a variety of pigments with different colors, lightness and unsaturation according to user requirements. Ink production has entered a new stage of development.

Nano calcium carbonate is the filler of printing ink, with the advantages of good stability, high gloss, does not affect the drying performance of printing ink, strong adaptability. Calcium carbonate products are widely used in all sectors of the national economy. As science continues to develop, the output of micro calcium carbonate will increase accordingly. The application of nanoscale calcium carbonate can effectively improve the quality of ink, medicine, food, daily chemicals and other products, and its importance will be increasingly understood by people.

2 - Nano ink and its mechanism

Nanomaterials applied to ink system will give the ink industry a huge boost.

Nowadays, with the help of high new technology, various ingredients of the ink (such as resin, pigments, fillers, etc.) can be made into nanoscale materials, in this way, due to their high fineness and good flow and lubricity, they can achieve better dispersed suspension and stabled. Use less pigment, but high covering power, good gloss, resin particle size is exquisite, film forming continuously, uniform and smooth, thin film layer, which made the printing image clearly. If used in UV ink, may lead to faster curing rate, while eliminating the shrinkage and wrinkling of the ink film due to the fine and uniform dispersion of the filler. When some substances are at the nanometer level, the colors of different particle sizes are different, or different substances have different colors. Also there have inorganic nanomaterials such as nano AI203 with very good fluidity, can greatly improve the wear resistance of the ink film if added to the ink.

Nano carbon ink has electrical conductivity, has good shielding effect on static electricity, if added to ink, it can be made into conductive ink, apply to such as large capacity integrated circuit, modern contact panel switch. In addition, some nano powder particles have their own luminescent groups, which may emit light by themselves, the material itself is non-toxic, harmless, does not contain any radioactive elements, have excellent stability and weather resistance, and can be recycled for unlimted times. Printing with this nanoparticle ink for anti-counterfeiting printing can achieve a very good anti-counterfeiting effect, also it can be used for outdoor large advertising printing or night reading graphic prints, not only can save energy, but also very convenient. Besides, the nanoparticles have very good surface wettability, they can adsorbed on the ink pigment particles surface, which can greatly improve the lipophilicity and wettability, and can ensure the stability of the entire ink dispersing system. Therefore, the printing performance of ink with nanoparticles was greatly improved.

Nanoparticles can also replace chemical pigments to make printing inks.  The ink is brightly colored, pure color, non - toxic and tasteless. This production system uses nano-particle printing inks with uniform particles, the produced ink is bright in color, pure in hue, non-toxic and tasteless. Nanometer ink have wide application prospects in offset printing, gravure printing, and flexo printing colored cartons & boxes.

3 - Production and product quality of nano calcium carbonate special for ink

The composition of the ink can be divided into three parts: The liquid components called linker. The solid components are colorants (pigments or dyes) and various additives. In ink industry, nanoscale calcium carbonate belongs to the body pigments and the fillers in pigments (carbon ink, titanium dioxide, zinc barium white, iron chrome yellow, iron orchid, iron oxide orchid, metal pigments, aluminum hydroxide, colloid calcium carbonate, organic pigments and dyes, reductive pigments, quinacridone, dioxazine violet, tetraoxyisopurinone). Colloid calcium carbonate, is nano calcium carbonate, its average particle size is between 0.02~0.1 μm. The calcium carbonate used in ink at the earlest time, is  produced by precipitation of calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate with surface modification, with good transparency and luster. At present, most of the nano calcium acid is produced by limestone carbonization method, its production process and product quality must meet the requirements of manufacturing ink.

4 - The amount of nano calcium carbonate added in ink

The production of ink can be roughly divided into preparation, batching, stirring, rolling and grinding, inspection and canning and other procedures. Preparation stage is to pre-process all kinds of raw materials come into the factory according to the requirements of manufacturing inks, to ensure that the raw materials meet the requirements of the manufacturing of ink. The batching stage is to mix all kinds of the raw materials in proportion according to the manufacturing ink formula, which is the key of manufacturing ink. Stirring stage is to disperse the pigment particles into the liquid connection material, which requires a certain amount of energy to crush the solid material anddisperse into the liquidconnection material. After stirring, the mixture will go to rolling and grinding, according to the consistency of the ink, respectively using three-roll machine or bead mill grinding, its purpose is to make the pigment fully dispersed in the liquid connection material, and make the pigment particles reach a certain fineness. After inspection of hue, fineness, fluidity, viscosity, dry properties conform to the requirements of the design, then it can be canning, and finish the ink production processing.

From the ink production process, pigment is solid, the better the dispersion, the smaller the average particle size, the easier to disperse evenly in the connection material, the better the ink quality, otherwise the ink quality is poor. As the body pigment in the ink, calcium carbonate, if it reaches the nanometer level and undergoes surface modification, it has good compatibility with the connecting material, which will play a certain role in the production of the ink and improve the quality of the ink. Nano-scale activated calcium carbonate is required as a filler in ink manufacturing. Different types of ink require different amounts of calcium carbonate.

5 - Conclusion

Nanoparticles play an increasingly important role in packaging and printing industry. Nano ink compatible with all aspects of performance. In the packaging and printing of products (especially food), many of them have high requirements on sterilization and preservation, while traditional inks and packaging materials are blank in this aspect.
