With the continuous improvement of new materials, new energy and new properties in the market, the requirements for the physical and chemical properties of non-metallic ultrafine powder products are getting higher and higher. However, domestic ultrafine powder grinding equipment is far from meeting the needs of product processing, most of the product quality, variety, output and cost can not meet the needs of the domestic market, also lack of competitiveness in the international market.




In the market, the demand for ultrafine products from non-metallic mines is developing rapidly in the direction of particle size less than 2μm. In the past, the performance of non-metallic mineral fine powder was usually measured by the number of mesh, now it is more likely to be measured by the particle size such as D50 and D90. Generally speaking, when D50 and D90 are under controlled, the fineness and particle size distribution of fine powder are basically being controlled. The change of performance measured standard reflects the improvement of market demand for fine powder performance. It will be difficult for the manufacturers who use conventional grinding equipment such as Jet Mill, Agitating Mill, Raymond Mill, High Speed Impact Mill and Vibration Mill to produce large quantities of ultrafine nonmetallic ore powder with high performance requirements.

Jet Mill uses high-speed airflow as the energy carrier to make the processed materials produce violent collision and friction to achieve the purpose of crushing, and then the built-in classifier is used to control the particle fineness and particle size distribution. If the classifier is good enough, the material with good particle size distribution can be prepared. However, due to the huge energy consumption and high production cost, the grinding fineness of materials is also limited.

Since the 1980s, bead mill have become more and more popular in many industries, including paint, food and pharmaceutical industry. In particular, since the 1990s, large horizontal bead mill have been effectively used in the grinding of nonferrous metals. This large horizontal bead mill can also meet the needs of the production of ultrafine powder from most non-metallic mines.

The horizontal bead mill grinds minerals with the following characteristics:

1. High grinding intensity

The energy density in the grinding chamber of the horizontal bead mill is 300kw/m3. The energy density in the agitator mill is 35kw/m3, and the energy density of ball mill is only 20kw /m3. The horizontal bead mill require only a small installation site.

2. High grinding efficiency and low energy consumption

Horizontal bead mill can use smaller grinding beads (1 mm to several mm). The high energy density of a horizontal bead mill allows smaller beads to break up coarse particles. Smaller but more beads in the chamber, can produce more impact and grinding, and high up  grinding efficiency.

With the improvement of grinding efficiency, the energy consumption is correspondingly reduced. The energy consumption of horizontal bead mill is 30% to 50% lower than that of agitator mill or ball mill.

3. Product performance improvement

Because the ceramic or oxide ball with smaller particle size is used as the grinding media, the material grinded by horizontal bead mill has finer particle fineness (equal to or less than 2), and the particle size distribution is improved and the result is more satisfactory.

4. Simple maintenance

The entire horizontal bead mill, including the energy unit, gearbox, grinding system, etc., is installed horizontally to facilitate maintenance and repair. The use of more wear-resistant materials and easy replacement of the structure and components also makes maintenance time shorter. Horizontal bead mill can be used up to 99% of the time.

5. Large capacity and high power

The grinding volume of horizontal bead mill is from 500 liters to 50,000 liters, the installation power is from 200KW to 8000KW, this enables different sizes of non-metallic mineral processing line can choose the appropriate horizontal bead mill.

6. Has the function of scaling up

From the experimental type to large, super-large horizontal bead mill, all have the same type of structure. The data obtained from the experimental bead mill can be scaled up to production-type equipment in a 1:1 efficient manner.

7. Low installation cost

The low height and high productivity of horizontal bead mill make the arrangement of equipment relatively easy and the installation cost lower.

In fact, domestic grinding machine manufacturers such as PUHLER® have prepared large bead mill such as PHE 1200, which can be used in non-metallic mining industry. The structure and function of PHE 1200 are almost the same as the same type of equipment in foreign countries. PHE 1200 has been successfully used for the fine grinding of titanium dioxide, barium sulfate and zirconium silicate materials. The PHE 3000 horizontal bead mill from PUHLER® was in the design stage. Due to the same structure as PHE1200, PHE3000 does not have great difficulty in technology and preparation. PUHLER's special rubber grinding disc has also replaced the imported grinding disc, used for the 2500 litre bead mill. PUHLER®'s longer-term plan is to prepare a horizontal bead mill PHE 10000, which can be used to prepare ultrafine powders of nonmetallic minerals.
